Application Scenarios
Fast Ethernet technology can be used to improve the performance and management of a workgroup network in several different ways. The LAN designs described in this section can be implemented together or independently.

Improving Overall Network Performance
The first network scenario uses asymmetric, 10/100-Mbps LAN switching in conjunction with hubs and routers. In this design, switches segment hubs to increase performance on shared media LANs without changing a network's topology.

However, to enhance client/server performance across the enterprise, servers connected directly to the Fast Ethernet interfaces on LAN switches aggregate traffic from numerous, switched-10-Mbps Ethernet segments. These switched workgroups connect to the building or campus backbone through routers with Fast Ethernet interfaces.

Improving Performance to the Desktop
In the second scenario, 10-Mbps LAN switching is integrated to the desktop, providing dedicated bandwidth to the user and optional VLAN management services to the network manager. LAN switches can be linked together (cascaded) using their Fast Ethernet interfaces to build high- density- switched workgroups.

Alternatively, shared Fast Ethernet bandwidth can be integrated to the desktop, allowing user applications to obtain burst data speeds up to 100 Mbps. Network designs that serve smaller clusters of users result in less contention as well as high bandwidth network access for users. For example, an electronic prepress application can move large amounts of page layout data among user workstations with a burst speed of 100 Mbps.

Improving Performance in the Data Center
In the third scenario, the switching platform in the data center provides high densities of switched Fast Ethernet and integrated VLAN capabilities for use as a collapsed backbone switch. High-density Fast Ethernet is necessary for connecting multiple servers in the data center for applications such as server farms. Switched Fast Ethernet, particularly in full duplex mode, can accommodate the aggregate bandwidth of workgroups distributed across the switched-Internet work.

In this scenario, VLANs are implemented across Fast Ethernet switches, servers, and routers to provide workgroups with high bandwidth and security.

At the same time, VLANs provide easier network administration to facilitate user adds, moves, and changes in an evolving LAN. Since Fast Ethernet technology is now being implemented on a wider scale and VLAN technologies are finding their way to adapters, such architectures are becoming more viable and cost effective.
